The Hump Hostel & Restaurant is back!

Located in the heart of Kunming, The Hump has been a popular destination for travelers for more than 15 years and has recently been totally renovated.

It is named after The Hump, a route across the eastern Himalayas created by the American Air Force during World War 2.

The Hump Hostel dorms have between 6 beds and 12 beds per dorm. The dorm beds are semi-private with a curtain and come with its own power sockets, USB ports, reading lights and collapsible table. Each dorm bed comes with a private locker.

The rooms have a modern European style design; there are Double rooms, Twin rooms and Family rooms. All the rooms have private bathrooms, TV, air-con and heater.

The Restaurant and Bar is serving both authentic Chinese food and Western food. In the daytime you can enjoy the sunshine on the terrace and in the evening, have a game of pool or watch the bar entertainment.

The drink menu feature a selection of beers from affordable Qingdao to high end Erdinger, and a variety of cocktails, juices and coffee.

The terrace is the coolest rooftop garden in Kunming! Overlooking the rooftop garden, you will see the ancient twin gates of Jinmabiji Square.

Across from The Hump is Kunming most popular Pedestrian Street with shopping malls, food stores and a Carrefour Supermarket. Green Lake Park and Yuantong Temple are about 2KM north of The Hump and the Eastern and Western Pagodas are less than 1 KM south.

Kunming International Airport is 25km away, and can be reached by subway or a 40-minute taxi ride.

Met a friend after dinner for drinks and chat up on the rooftop patio/bar. Music was a little loud for us - but was surprised at this jewel of a bar. What a nice comfortable place.

I was told the hostel only charges cny40 a night for a shared room bunk bed - can't beat that.

Truly a gem for travelers on a budget and the rooftop bar has a beautiful and memorable sunset view (see the pictures).

Not quite the old Hump but the terrace is more or less unchanged and there's even a lift up to it. The bar is bigger and better looking. It's a bit more expensive but not too bad. Imported beers are 30 kuai and local beers 15. I think that's ok given the great location. So give it a try.

I have only heard stories about the 'old' Hump, but the new Hump is amazing! Beautiful clean, new and spacious dorms in a historical building that is really well-restored. The location and the views from the rooftop terrace are great, so even if you are a Kunming resident and not staying in the hostel it's good place to visit for a drink or something to eat.
