Sandra's has closed down.
I don't think I've ever had a bad meal at Sandra's, and trust me, I've had a lot of meals there! Sandra is an excellent chef and her passion for good food is shown in the quality of her cooking. She is very creative with her dishes, and the menu changes regularly to keep it interesting - I always look forward to seeing what's new on the menu. A couple of things are pretty much always available - the pizza menu and steak, both of which are fantastic! The steak is some of the best I've ever had in my life, let alone in Kunming, and the pizza is great too! The prices are high, but what do you expect when Sandra uses the best ingredients available here, and imports a lot too. In my opinion, it's totally worth it! The restaurant's waitress, Xiaohua, is such a sweet girl - she always has a smile for the customers, and works very hard to give the best service possible. Sandra herself is dead sociable and makes you feel really welcome. It's one of my top 3 places to eat in Kunming, and easily one of the best restaurants I've ever been to!
What a surprise for find this small but awesome place.
Sandra created a place most chefs dreams of. A small place where you feel comfortable the second you walk in.
But beside the atmosphere and that Sandra makes you feel more than welcome how about the food?
Honestly, I did not expect too much after following reviews for restaurants in Kunming and being more disappointed than satisfied.
But our dinner at Sandra's was the best we had in Kunming so far.
Australian Angus and Wagyu. This kind of meat quality you won't even find in many restaurants in New York. And for this quality of meat I consider the steak I had to be very cheap. I had a similar steak a short while ago in Shanghai and paid more than RMB 600 for it.
Our salad came with a very balanced Balsamic dressing, the first great dressing I had since arriving in Kunming.
Our dessert, Tiramisu, was one of the best I ever got in a restaurant.
The wine selection is very solid and pretty cheap too compared to what I am asked to pay in other places around.
If I would life in Beichen you would probably find me at Sandra's several times a week.
Keep up doing such a good job Sandra!
I hadn't realised how much I missed European wine until I quaffed down a good bottle of (reasonably priced) Tempranillo at Sandra's last night. The food was exquisite - and plentiful too, even to satisfy my bottomless appetite! Sandra and Pierre made my boyfriend and I feel utterly welcome, and the combination of good food (we had a veggie and calzone pizza each - dribble noises), sumptuous pudding (raspberry tiramisu? there should be a law against that kind of decadence) and intellectual conversation until pretty late all made for one of the best evenings we have had in China so far. We will be going back there regularly - amazing stuff.
We had such amazing food tonight that I had to write a review immediately. First was the fresh salad which she regularly pairs with main courses—a fantastic combination of greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, cheese and a light vinaigrette. Then we had pasta and a boeuf bourguignon, The pasta dish was lemon tagliatelle, slightly al dente and fantastic. The boeuf bourguignon was just so tender it fell apart on the plate, with carrots and home-made noodles. Sandra makes everything well, but this has been one of my favorites. Last, we had a freshly made rice pudding that was creamy and smooth and properly seasoned with just the right amount of cinnamon.
We eat at Sandra's all the time, and we are always happy. Tonight was particularly delicious. I. LOVE. SANDRA's. Wish I could give it six stars.
Thanks, Sandra and Xiaohua!
