Airport Boneheads

That is the best description I give to the people responsible for the planning and construction of Kunmings' flagship airport.

Why would they locate in an area that is notorious for fog, even on clear days. Then on top of that not install the proper equipment for allowing aircraft to operate under these conditions.

I just don't get it.

It is because successful completion of a project is considered more important than successful operation of the asset that project created. That is how leaders get promoted in China and as long as that continues you will see more idiotic infrastructure decisions (likely increasing in idiocy!).

couldn't agree more. same with any other major project.

-bird nest beijing...unused most of the time.

-three gorges dam.....most turbines not used, reported cracks. and supposedly the reason for earthquakes according to local and int. scientists, due to the huge watermasses pushing on the tectonic plates. even messing with earth rotation.

every new project is a beacon of stupidity translates into chinese = national treasure. lol

i don.t know why everybody is so worried about china taking over. there is no way. look how they do things! everything they do it's falling apart and biting it's own tail.
until they they get their shit together there is nothing to worry about.

and if things develop for the better and people raise awarenes, logic and courtesy then we all benefit.

as i see it we win either way.

If you think that's funny - take a look at the history of the port city Kiaosung in Taiwan. The engineers read the plans backwards and ended up installing the port in reverse (aka shallow is deep, deep is shallow). Took roughly 20 years of dredging (aka fighting the forces of mother nature) to make the port usable...

@dudeson's
Check the date of construction of the port and then check when it was opened. Government construction, incompetence, negligence, and coverups are NOT unique to the USA and Japan - well known secret in Kaosiung (thanks for subtlety correcting my typo on the name - couldn't remember how to write ... what is that...yale-style putonghua?...

JJ - do you recall this thing?

To give y'all an example of Taiwan shenanigans - check out this 2011 comment by the Taiwan Government:

Odd water color at 'South Star' not a concern: officials
The abnormal color of seawater at the "South Star" land reclamation project in Greater Kaohsiung's Siaogang District (小港) is the result of furnace slag from China Steel Corp that is being used in reclamation work, the Chinese-language Apple Daily reported yesterday.
