Taking YunNan Ham abroad.

I want to take one or two large pieces of YunNan Ham to Europe (Netherlands via UK).

Has anyone experienced success or failure in trying to take cooked, preserved, sealed portions of ham to any EU country? And I mean the large commercially produced stuff you see being sold in gift packaging - Metro currently has lots of this right now.

Is there any certification or marking on the packaging that would increase the chance of success in getting it into the NL via UK?

The ham will end up in the hands of YunNan students studying in the NL in time for Spring Festival if I can take it in successfully.

The link below seems to answer my own question: ec.europa.eu/food/fs/ah_pcad/posters/newposters/english.pdf

Plus: The Regulation came into force on 1 May 2004, and:

permanently prohibits all personal consignments of meat, meat products, milk and milk products from entering the EU, including packages sent to private persons, unless specifically authorised and certified as being eligible for EU entry.

I guess there is no such eligible packaged YunNan Ham available.

The key here is the word "personal". You may want to see/inquire at the duty free about SHIPPING the stuff store to store for pickup at your destination, or have the store trans-ship for you to a local business with which you have a personal relationship.

Long time ago - my father's buddy ran a chinese restaurant in Australia. He fried up some eggs and poured some soy sauce over it - the Australian health inspector berated him for serving "poisonous" food and threatened to close down his restaurant (obviously also soliciting a bribe from the chinaman). Just like TSA the rules are utterly illogical - but there's ALWAYS a LEGAL way around the rules. One just has to read between the lines.

Good luck - and I'm not really sure why you'd want to take heavily salted ham stuffed in a can back home...unless you're REALLY sentimental.

I was surprised by how much Yunnan ham resembles Italian prosciutto. My wife says some guy called Marco Polo stole the recipe when he was here.
