Yunnan's Prisons

What's amazing is how many of the prisons were established in the 1950s. Was Yunnan really that dangerous at the time? What would they possibly need so many prisons for?

I was almost certain that the United States wouldn't allow imports produced with prison labor. Maybe I'm wrong on that one, though.

Yunnan was like the wild wild west a few decades ago - because of the heavy military presence (which most don't notice) and the proximity to the golden triangle - Yunnan used to experience running gun battles with extremely well-armed ex-military lured by the immense temptations of drug money and the resulting corruptions that stem from that kind of criminal wealth. In those days, drug trafficking had only one penalty - execution - so most gangsta's tended toward the melodramatic Jame's Cagney style shootouts when cornered.

Thankfully - things are a LOT more peaceful these days.
