I used Western Union last week. I transferred money to my father's account in the US and he went to a WU location in town and sent it to me. That's when things got frustrating. I went to China Everbright Bank since they have WU service, but couldn't get it in RMB unless I opened an account. That wasn't really a problem since I needed one, so I did that. If I had another account I could have taken the USD and deposited it there, I think. After opening the account, they looked for the money and couldn't find it in the system. Apparently WU has a security check in place for large transfers to China and I had to call and wake up my dad in the middle of the night so he could call WU Customer Service and get the money released. It was no fun and took hours, but I did get the cash and got to pay for my apartment.
