Legally; as in taking actual, physical cash? 5,000USD or the equivilant in any other currency (as of summer 2016).
Any more than that and you're supposed to have documentation from the bank.
Now, if you're taking RMB out of the country the limit is different but I can't remember what is was, sorry.
