Most of the farmers I've seen live in courtyard houses. Have you seen what modern private villas go for in China? Tell me how trading that for one or two crappy apartments is a fair tradeoff.
Johannes,
will it really be a bare shell? or come with windows, exterior doors, and water and electricity into at least one point in the house. Plus electricity into one point, and a working light in each room?
Yep electricity, water, doors and windows are there
I agree with Annonymous Coward''s post.
In addition, the prices which the appartments are sold are just made up from thin air...The farmers are getting ripped off.
Ive seen simillar resettlements west of kunming,in tai ping south.. substandard everything and the farmers loose their way of life and the freedom of the outdoors.
This resettlement will be in the history
books.
agree with Annonymous Coward and mike4g_air
this comment as relayed by ChinaSmack about sums it up:
"哪里有压迫,哪里有反抗"
"where there is oppression there will be resistance"
5000 rmb is a lot for a peasant, especially if they've lost their farmland, too.
More important is losing most of their farmland, which is their living.
@lesterness: Not sure 5000 is a lot these days. The farmers lose their homes and their incomes. Given they are uneducated and have, for the most part, rural skills, the money won't last too long.
