UK's Arup lands Kunming airport deal

By in News on

UK-based design/engineering consultancy Arup has secured a deal to design Kunming's new international airport, which is expected to become China's fourth-largest airport hub.

The airport, which by 2035 is expected to handle more than 60 million passengers per year, will be designed alongside a Chinese design institute which has yet to be named.

The £1.6 billion (US$3 billion) airport should be one of China's more striking air hubs. Its terminals will be housed in a pagoda-style structure and it will be partially solar powered.

The agreement, which is expected to be worth as much as £25 million (US$47 million) was signed at 10 Downing Street during Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's UK visit last week.
