Photos: A sneak peek at Kunming's new airport

By in News on

This weekend, while much of Kunming was on holiday, some people were hard at work at the massive construction site east of the city that, if everything goes according to schedule, will be a functioning international airport by the end of this year.

The launch of the new airport is expected to be nothing short of a game-changer for Kunming, bolstering its profile nationally, regionally and beyond.

It might not have as much impact as the Olympics did on Beijing or the World Expo did on Shanghai, but it is hard to understate the effect that regular direct flights to new destinations in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Oceania and possibly beyond will have upon the Spring City.

Watch this space in the coming months for new routes, as they are announced. In the meantime, here is a gallery of photos of what will soon be one of China's largest airports.

Sounds exciting...I'm really keen on seeing whether this airport can live up to all the hype and attract not only more flights from different overseas countries, but also more visitors, turning the city potentially into a regional cosmopolitan city of sorts. Similarly, new airports are always exciting.

I want to have my direct flight from Belgium(or neighbouring country):-)

I hope the cost will go down with it, so that instead of flying once a year,I can go twice a year.
Shortened trip is one of the other reasons.

While "Getting there is (supposed to be) half the fun", it's never been much of an interesting game waiting in Guangzhou, Shanghai or Bejing lines for Customs; sitting in their newer terminals for hours "people watching" or even riding the electric Chinese-design Segways which were once tried as a means of personal transportation through what seemed like endless halls & corridors at plane-changes. Personally, I am hoping the new airport will be opened before the Dec. 20th. anniversary of the Flying Tigers first air-battles over Kunming. The new museum is slated to open that date, and the Christmas holidays are always something to look forward to... PVZ
