By in News on

Germany-based DHL became the first foreign-owned express company to operate air express services in China's domestic market last Friday, opening the way for foreign express carriers to operate in the country's fast-growing express sector, according to a People's Daily report.

Kunming is one of 17 mainland cities the China Air Transport Association has approved for DHL air express services. The other 16 cities include Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shenyang, Qingdao, Tianjin, Chengdu, Xiamen, Urumqi, Xi'an, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Ningbo and Wuhan.

DHL's mainland air express services will primarily focus on the biotechnology, electronics, clothing and transport sectors and will work in tandem with China-based freight carriers including Air China Cargo, China Southern Airlines, China Cargo Airlines and Shanghai Airlines. The company plans to serve 70 cities via 37 branches by 2012.
