Thai AirAsia talks of new route to Kunming

By in News on

Thai AirAsia, the Thai subsidiary of Malaysia-based low-cost carrier AirAsia, is planning on introducing a Bangkok-Kunming route as early as the third quarter of this year, according to Thai media reports.

In an interview with the Bangkok Post, Thai AirAsia chief executive Tassapon Bijleveld said the company planned to introduce new routes between Thailand and Kunming, as well as to other mainland cities such as Shenzhen, Chengdu and Chongqing.

Thai AirAsia, which will add 40 new A320 aircraft to its fleet in the coming six years, intends to operate 320 flights a day through its Bangkok hub by 2012 - it currently operates 82 per day.

This is not the first time that the carrier has spoken of intentions to fly to Kunming. In late 2005 the company spoke prematurely of plans to fly between Bangkok and Kunming for roughly 200 yuan (US$25.00) one-way. The planned route never materialized.
