I enjoyed Megan's article. However, a slight correction. Diqing Prefecture has multiple lakes higher than Bita. It is NOT the highest lake in Yunnan. I myself can give you directions to many higher.

I enjoyed Megan's article. However, a slight correction. Bita Lake is indeed NOT the highest lake in Yunnan, as I myself have hiked into higher and more beautiful lakes in Shangri-la County. Probably just a highest/biggest/largest/ exaggeration by the local guide.

Sounds like a standard bowl of mixian (rice noodles), the tofu may have been a softer version of bean curd known as douhua... we'll try to get a traditional version of this dish on the site in the coming weeks. Thanks for the suggestion!

Hi! tnx so much for this recipe. I just returned from a 6 week China tour, and, must admit, that I miss my new breakfast tradition - soup!

Please, if you can help me find a recipe for this soup I had, from Beijing to Lijiang, and then it sort of disappeared.

It was a clear broth, and rice noodles, and then typically a sort of spicy, ground (im assuming) pork, and pickled greens, then you can add green onions or tofu....

any ideas, or hints? it's not crossing the bridge noodles, there were no pieces of chicken or shrimp.

very simple and plain. and very good!

tnx so much!!

Oil prices bottomed out around the end of last year/beginning of this year and have been on an upward trend ever since.

Also, gasoline and diesel prices in China are set by the central government, which raised gasoline prices by 7% on 2 June.

Does anyone know of non-window dressing type volunteer / recovery activities that foreigners might take part in?

i don't think it sounds odd that the casualty figures are so low. the weather was good, it was during daylight, the area is (relatively) low population density and remember that the Richter scale is logarithmic, so 6 is ten times smaller than 7.

however, i concur that we're likely to hear of more dead and injured over the coming hours and days.

According to China Daily 18.000 homes/buildings collapsed and one person was killed. Sounds odd that only 1 person has died so I expect the death toll will rise quite a lot over the next couple of days.

Chris,

Really appreciate Go Kunming's fast reporting on relevant matters in Yunnan.

Google news search turned up your report only after Reuters.

Keep up the good work.
