Forums > Living in Kunming > VPNs being blocked?

The DNS servers for China Telecom have always been horrible, but I've noticed they've gotten considerably worse lately(probably on purpose).

For example if you load a website like example.com it might take ten tries. But if you add www and load www.example.com it will only take two or three tries.

I have two servers that hardly ever load in China. One is hosted on DigitalOcean and the other on OpenShift. Once I change the computer to use a different DNS server they then load 90% of the time instead of 10% of the time.

For a brief period this morning I noticed the internet slowed considerably, especially https connections. My speed went from a max of 6 mbps down to about 2 mbps for about an hour.

Were you using anything else before trying to connect? Torrent? Google?

The invitation letter just states who you intend to visit, contact information, and intended length of stay. Since it's basically a "visit family" permit it makes sense.

It doesn't have to be anything official looking. We usually just write it in a couple minutes while there if we forgot to do it.

The photo has to have some sort of police registered photo or something.

I don't remember what it's called exactly, but they will just tell you to do it at the photo place next door.

They will give you the police registration document with a sheet of photos. It also expires, but it's cheap. I think it took 10 minutes or so for them to take the photos, print, and cut them. They do them in batches. The room isn't big so take an umbrella if you want to wait outside if it's rainy.

I asked today, and the price was 3,700 RMB for a round trip ticket. That was for the middle of next month. Which is roughly the same price as a ticket with a layover somewhere else.

If you have time it's much cheaper to fly to Bangkok and then take the scenic route to a ferry somewhere.

And the Chinese name is Sumeidao苏梅岛

Also look at the roads that were just recently redone. In the north they aren't even a year old and the top layer is rapidly decaying. When the holes get big enough to do serious damage to small cars they just put a traffic cone in it....

If it's banned for industrial use doesn't that mean there are some pretty nasty heavy metals in the water? Why would they allow shrimp to be fished in the past? Do they want people to get cancer or something?

Cheese tasted great. Much better than other pizza joints.

Excellent salad bar. Hamburgers are usually ok. The fancier dishes were a little lacking.

Giving it a 4 stars for the salad bar. If you were going there for "fine dining" then probably best to go somewhere else.

The store also has some nice imported food(though obviously Metro is cheaper for some things). The freshly baked goods are nice too.

Seems to be pretty hit or miss. First time I went there the pizza and hamburgers were great. 2nd time the pizza was terrible, and the hamburger was ok. 3rd time the pizza was ok, but people were smoking inside by the time we left. Guess the no smoking policy is not enforced.

Not bad. Pretty much what you would expect, but expensive for China.

Expensive, but decent bread. Other places are better, but not bad if you're in a hurry.
