The die off was due mostly to one particular night where it got to minus 8 degrees centigrade. There were sub zero temperatures for about 4-5 days. I believe the trees affected were not native to Yunnan, but native to Guangdong which is very hot and wet most of the year.

Mid Oct-Nov temperatures are around 10 degrees C/50 F. The temperature ranges day low to day high is about 10-12 degrees.

Weather is the selling point. Food sucks. Totally sucks. local food, general Chinese and foreign. Service is horrid. All Thai food restaurants just serve hot pot and shao kao. No one speaks any English despite the place being loaded to the gills with Universities. They will not attempt to understand your Chinese unless it is flawless the first time. The other foreigners are aloof and paranoid. if you don't fit in to the end of the bar of Salvadors you just don't belong. Nothing to see. Nothing to do. Students are all collectively brain dead and apathetic. The fashion sense is Villager Chic. women who walk bow legged and dress in leather pants and leopard skin pattern blouses. But all in all, I like it since I generally hate life anyway. As good a place as any other.

Even the weather is no longer a selling point. It really ISN'T a spring city. That's been untrue for awhile but they still try to sell on that. A true spring city is Miami, Florida. Kunming? Huh! No way. I like the leather/leopard pants when they're on a beautiful girl that has a round or pear shape ass. If you have a flat ass please girls/ladies just wear slacks or jeans! Jesus! Ha.Ha. Another thing, Kunming is not a cheap place anymore. The prices have shot up quickly in the last 5 years. Faster than salaries. So don't believe the hype.
