I recently heared about a direct bus connection between Kunming and Hanoi. Can anyone confirm this? If true, where does this bus leave. If not, what is the best way to travel to Vietnam via land nowadays? I checked other posts, but they might be dated.

<content:encoded><![CDATA[hey,just came back from vietnam! no direct bus to hanoi,unfortunately. you first have to take a bus to hekou (daily or sleeper bus 150rmb) then from hekou bus station a taxi to the border (10min).then go through immigration and walk across the bridge on the border to the vietnam side,the city of lao cai. from there you can either walk (20/30min cant remember exactly) or take a taxi to lao cai train station,where you can get a train to hanoi. there's one in the morning 09.50am vietnamese time (i highly recommend]]></content:encoded>

@jorrit i left kunming at 7 pm ( east bus station), arrived in hekou around 1/2 am, slept on the bus till 6 then crossed over to lao cai. took the 9.50 am train and got to hanoi around 9 pm. there's 1 hour time difference in vietnam!]]></content:encoded>

The price is 146 kuai and there are some busses during the dayand also at 19.00 so you can sleep on the bus ;) after when you enter in Vietnam (the first village is called Lao Cai) there is a direct train to Hanoi (but it's long trip, around 10 hours) and buses.]]></content:encoded>
