    • Getting Away: Luang Prabang

Yes that is what i meant, mostly superficial or non existant. Which I think is pretty negative. In Luang Prabang it is so apparent that a majority of the locals are totally fed up with many of the foreigners that visit the town.

    • Getting Away: Luang Prabang

I agree with bluppfisk the backpackers are an exhibit in their own way, and they have changed the attitude of the locals considerably. Dealing with them is convenient because they can all speak great English and have perfectly adjusted their ways to accommodate this continuous wining and dining of the tourists, but in their hearts you feel a big distance and you feel the need to make money off the tourists is stronger that genuine hospitality. Especially if you compare it to travelling around in Yunnan or even parts of rural Laos just kilometres away from tourist centres like Luang Prabang. I agree there is an interesting cultural heritage and a general pleasant laid-back vibe. But after a week I was really fed up with those foreigner-local relations that ruin the atmosphere.

    • Cycling from Kunming to Lüchun

      Hi Voltaire,

Thank you so much for your correction. I asked a few locals about it and actually tried to distill a story that was as plausible as possible out of their contradicting answers, happy you could clear that up!

When I get back to Kunming next week, I'll post some more anecdotes of my cycling inside Luchun county, and some more pictures.

    • Insect cuisine: Bugging out in Kunming

      Great article indeed!

In southern Yunnan (I found this in Honghezhou) they also tend to sell a roadside snack that consists of an empty honey comb with living bee larvae inside. A friend of mine bought a piece and tried a few, but it was too much for me. I'm okay with eating insects but not when they are alive.

    • Kindergarten English Teacher (Chinese)

Classifieds > Jobs > Jobs Offered

I need a Chinese national to help me review English classes in 2 kindergartens in Kunming and Chuxiong. This would mean a well-payed full-time position for next semester after some try-outs together in June. You'll be in Kunming for half the week and in Chuxiong the other half. I will tell you my curriculum and you review the classes with the kids when I'm not there. I do lot's of fun activities with the kids that makes them use creativity with the language instead of being able to blurt out "apple" or "banana" like a machine.

      Your abilities should include:
      * scepticism towards the Chinese education system.
      * fluent English!
      * really good with kids, preferably experienced.
      * flexible, open-minded person willing to learn stuff.

      What we can offer:
      * a full-time job that is payed well
      * lots of opportunities to learn

Please react (only Chinese nationals) in correct English and attach your CV!

    • Forums > Living in Kunming > Laowai in Beijing trys to rape girl...

Funny how the ridiculous trolling of 123go just gets completely ignored.

I'm shocked by the reaction of some jingoist Chinese netizens all of a sudden calling every foreigner a rapist. I think it's racist to be more offended by this crime because a foreigner is the culprit. And even more to insinuate that it is something that only foreigners would do. And they do really talk like this on the Chinese forums!

I'm offended by the measures taken by the PBS Beijing, because they act according to popular sentiment and are confirming this ridiculously xenophobic point of view.

Just reminds me China obviously needs it's nationalistic citizens and every time I realize this I'm just so disappointed!

    • Forums > Living in Kunming > Teacher Hiring Time Again...Beware.

Depends on confidence I guess. I deliver very high quality work and get a sufficient pay. People might lower the bar if they know their work is mediocre and easily substituted. A percentage of the teachers here doesn't take teaching seriously and they might pick up those 100/150rmb an hour jobs. I do my work with a lot of passion so i ask more and also get it. I think that's how it works.

    • Forums > Food & Drink > Restaurants you 'love to hate'

Billdan is a Negative Nancy. You don't come to Kunming to find the perfect panini indeed. If you're a bit creative in your choices on the menu and not too stingy, you can get a decent bite of Western food. Not great, but definitely good enough.
