    • Snapshot: Kunming Carnival's Grand Parade

Posting photos of an event after the fact is nice, but Go Kunming could provide a truly useful service by listing events like this in advance so those of us who live here could know to attend.

    • Yunnan's tourism industry lagging behind its neighbors

The bus tours originating in Kunming and going to places like Stone Forest are universally bad and in need of regulation. Spend all day with a guide and stop at half a dozen rip off souvenir stores on the way out and on the way back, eat a crappy lunch somewhere, and only have an hour at the destination.

Agree. It sure would be great to have advance notice of interesting cultural events. If one browses this website now, one could get the mistaken impression that the only thing Kunming expats care about is going to bars.

No. The issues I mentioned above are encountered by my Chinese friends too. It's not a "laowai" thing.

    • Forums > Living in Kunming > Kunming taxis

Need to revise my earlier comment. In all fairness, taxis here have treated me well much more often than they have done otherwise.

The frustrations I occasionally have with them stem mainly from there not being enough taxis for the current Kunming urban population.

Also shift change time and/or driver meal time seem to often coincide with rush hour and make taxis extremely scarce between about 5 and 7.

And when its raining, when one often wants a taxi most of all, they become even more scarce than when the sun is shining.

I'm not aware of ever having been cheated, and did not mean to imply that.

They ignore and abuse everyone, foreigners and locals alike. It's a matter of supply and demand.

    • Forums > Living in Kunming > Computer Shopping in Kunming

I didn't see any, but it may have been because I wasn't specifically looking for such a service. I did see lots of places which could modify your laptop or even build a desktop from scratch.

I wound up buying a Thinkpad X220 at 佰腾数码 (Bai Teng Shu Ma) on 一二一大解 (Yi Er Yi Street)。A local friend helped me shop.

      昆明市博物馆

The CNAC exhibit, which is on display now, February 2009, is extremely intersting and well done. Worth a trip. The museum charges no admission and the Number 1 Kunming bus goes there.
