the area surrounding Uprock (Kundu) is at times unsafe, but if you're going over there, Uprock is likely the best choice of a place to hang out. good sound system, great selection of beers, frequent band/DJ events and hands-on management make this *the* go-to Kunming nightspot. 嘎.

I’ve been here several times since it opened earlier this summer, and I love it! The music is good, way better than most other clubs in Kundu, and there is a big international beer selection, too, if you’re not in the mood for a Tsing Tao.
They have a food menu as well, although I’ve never ordered anything… but it’s nice to be able to get a snack out late when most places on Wenlin Jie are closed. I came once to watch a World Cup game, and there was a huge overhead projector to watch on plus live music before the game and at half time. I’ve also been on weekends for parties, and the DJs have been awesome. Good mix of foreigners and Chinese people :)

As one of the owners of Uprock, I am surprised to hear a complaint about Kundu security in relation to our bar. While security at other Kundu clubs may be of questionable quality, at Uprock we are working hard to improve the music scene in Kunming and provide a safe and vibrant environment for our customers to enjoy.
We try to create a genuine experience with consistently good music, a wide range of live musical acts, lots of beers and a reasonably priced menu. Our security guards have been given express instructions never to instigate or become involved in any physical confrontation with a customer unless it is completely unavoidable.
I do not believe our security guards act unreasonably or without cause, and caution customers against equating general club security in Kundu with our own security at Uprock. However, Hedgepig, if you had a negative experience with our security at Uprock, I encourage you to e-mail me at piers_tussaud@hotmail.com to discuss the issue.

Went there for Mid-autumn festival...there were about 15 people besides me. On the other hand, the chairs are comfy, and he music was great (although rather on the chillout-side).
And the White Russian is indeed very good. :)
All in all a good place, but no rock n' roll.

There is hardly any place in whole South-West China better than Uprock, good location, great terrace, tempting drink menu, snacks, changing live music/DJs, big dance floor, fat sound, various choices of comfy seating, nice hang-out at the bar, fair prices, active mixed male/female laowai/Chinese crowd.
From a customer's point of view I give it 5 out of 5, which doesn't mean they couldn't improve here and there.
Note for perfomers: Great venue to play with stage, sound and receptive crowd. However dealing details like promo and $$$ cash with the management is uber-mafan. Expect a fun night, but don't count on a financial return. Uprock isn't ready to do cover charges atm. Maybe the Kunmingers have to change their attitude, quit bitching about the "boring" nightlife. If you want to see acts from other cities/ countries be ready to cash in at the door.

I went to Uprock three times coz everybody keeps telling me how good this place is.
And I have to agree, the bar and stuff is great! The manager will suggest only good stuff to you. It seems she really knows what she is doing compared to lots of other places I have seen in China so far.
For their cocktails it's absolutely worth going there! I tried a Chocolate Cocktail last time and it was the best thing I had in my life! Even the White Russian is made with cream (how it is supposed to be) and not with milk like other places who want to save money. I also can recommend their Mojito and Caipirinha. It's not a bad copy, they do it the right way and using real Cachaca instead of Bacardi.
But for the music I must say I am a little disappointed. They are making advertisement but not playing what they promised. I went to a Latin Night and all they played was Hip Hop. I hope they will fix this!
I'm planning on going to their Rock Night and hope to hear some nice pieces of Rock Music!
