Awful experience! Had heard so much about this place and really looked forward to it, but it was BAD. Filthy cloth napkins, one of us received inedible food (tons of MSG), and I got the worst food poisoning ever after eating the special sausage dish. It made for a memorable evening, but not in a good way. Never again!
One point for the beautiful decor, just don't eat there!

I never understand why this place gets such bad reviews. I go there a few times a month and I'm never dissapointed. The pizza is pretty good for China and the pasta dishes are genuinely excellent. Authentic ingredients and home made pasta. The latte is also some of the best in town and it's a nice smart place to spend an evening. The bread is delicious especially with the virgin olive oil on every table and the mozarella is real unlike the rubbery stuff you normally get in Kunming. I've never had a problem with the service either. The waiters are all friendly and professional although sometimes main courses do come at different times if for example you order one pasta and one pizza dish.
The only improvements I would recommend would be to have parmesan and black pepper available to add to pasta dishes (although maybe that's just some made up thing no one in Italy would do...) and also to have some wine by the glass and imported Italian beer on the menu.
I really think Rocco's is one of the best places in Kunming for Western food and now that the prices everywhere have gone up so much it isn't even particularly expensive anymore.

When the cat is away the mice play.
I've been there (at the old location) with Rocko present and it was exellent, although without the owner present it was very disapointing..

I'm unfortunately going to have to agree with many of these reviews, Rocco's Ristorante Italiano was an overall real disappointment. I had been 4 times, however the last time I think will be the last. I unfortunately arrived with a very good appetite ordering what I had expected to be a hearty traditional lasagne (Y40.-), what came out (and took all too long) was at best an entree sized morsel. The "lasagne" sheets resembled layers of steamed wanton wrappers, and tasted like it, though the flavours inside were nice. I scoffed this down in no time still feeling really hungry (and enviously drooling at the large portioned fettuccini at the adjacent table), so I then ordered a hot chocolate and a tiramisu (as they never seem to have the caprese) to try and fill the gap. The Hot Chocolate was almost cold, and the tiramisu was some super white fluff with a tiny piece of something inside that resembled what you may expect in a tiramisu, however the Y100+ bill was way too high for a disappointing night out.
To sum up I gave it 3 stars as this restaurant after all is in China not in the West, however given the manager / owner is an Italian, the food and service was less that I had hoped for.

This place is the italian pendant to the french cafe, each in its own way but same style. Maybe some coaching in Customer Relation Management would do some good.

We have been to Roccos twice almost 3 years ago and we were very disappointed. Both times they forgot parts of your orders,....
But I wanted to give Rocco another try and I went back a couple of weeks ago. The place is nicely decorated, but that was it.This time I actually got what I ordered but unfortunatelly it was all very weak in taste. Improve your seasoning skills and some of the dishes would get quiet tasty.
The service was very slow and pretty unskilled. Always a big minus for me and a reason not to return.

Took a couple of friends there on a special occasion. It is known as the 'Italian-owned' restaurant, it turned out to be quite disappointing.
After we complained, the waitress brought Rocco along who said, "If you don't like it, you can leave it." - shocker. Of course,we care, we were there to spend money for a good time not that kinda of attitude.
He seems to be warm, friendly and helpful. It's unbelievable what he said to us. One would think that you would want to calm your customers down, instead of getting them worked up.
Later when we asked why the steak was served on a cold plate, Rocco had a girl brought us a wamish plate to change, (doesn't make any difference at all), not until we paid the bill, he explained further that "We Italians serve steak on a cold plate so we do not stain our shirts." I questioned him,"What are the napkins for?" Speechless.
Lastly, when was the last time you saw plastic plates served for the customers to use in an Italian-run western-style restaurant?? I mean, the over-priced food, lack of training staff, cheap plates, plus the attitude, all do not seem to hold their "Taste the legend" commercial after all.
I must say that there were enough misleading reviews here, by the look of a record of the review here, I am not the only one who is suspicious, as if there were reviews may have well been written by the owners or associates of Rocco's.

I'm member of Rocco's staff.
About Yeong's comment we have checked last days' orders and we couldn't find a trace about the one you wrote about.
Please, can you tell us the exact date when you encountered the problem? Our ingredients for pasta as well as salad dressing (extra virgin olive oil and italian balsamic vinegar) are imported and bought in Metro.

i've been there 3 times with my sister as she loved the atmosphere and the nicely baked pizza. but i have to say that pastas & sea food risotto were way too horrible and the green salad was soggy.
Especially the bloody cream pasta, it smells really bad like the ingridients gone off, So we complained to the waitress, but she just passed over the piece of paper to write down and walked away.
I was surprised to see how they dealt with such a situation and decided never come back again.

Ate here a couple of times this past week and I have to say that the food was terrific. Tried several pizzas, soup and some pasta, All were delicious and just like Napoli. Food was a little slow, but we filled ourselves with bread and salad while we waited. Noticed that the food served to Rocco took just as long as ours to arrive.Service was Ok. Not quite sure why our waiter kept trying to clear our table while we were obviously still eating. Didn't see any house wine on the menu that could be purchased by the glass. That would have been nice.
This isn't a reflection of Rocco's or anything but we had a great laugh as a very pretty girl sampled/slurped both the garlic olive oil and the vinagrette salad dressing from the serving ladle. Priceless!

Wonderful...they have the real stone oven again.
When I was there a couple of months ago it was gone.
Glad to hear they brought it back...makes all the difference in the world.
Maybe I'll give the place another shot.If the food's good you've got my business.

Went there with a couple of colleagues last week for lunch and I found the pizza to be really good. In fact I think it's the best pizza I've had in Kunming thus far and the decor was very nice indeed. "This would be a great place to bring a date" my friend noted. My only small grievance was the price. You'll have to fork over 60-70 kuai a pizza but in return you do get the real thing. One more thing, "austinpickers" wrote in his review that Rocco's didn't have a stone oven. That's not true. I didn't go take a look in the kitchen or anything but our pizzas were definitely made in a real pizza oven.

Good pastas and pizzas and some of the best bread in town. The upstairs balcony is great for al fresco dining when the weather is good.

I dont understand the philosophy of that place. Sometimes the food is really good, and two days later you get something different even though you ordered the same previous dish. If then arguing politely with the fuyuan....makes you not returning. A pity.

I share Bernie's experience. Food at Rocco is up and down. I went there 3 times: First time was really good, 2nd time I had same experience with a poorly stuffed Calzone Pizza and the 3rd time the wine got poured all over the table and my trousers by the waiter......

Rocco's restaurant is located at the eastern end of Wenlin Jie, very close to the hill down to the lake. The front of the restaurant has a nice veranda for watching the world go by, at least, in warm weather. Inside, the decor is quite European with large tables.
A couple of visits have demonstrated the need for Rocco's presence in the kitchen. The first visit, some time ago, delivered a good pizza and a bland vegetable soup. The second visit delivered a calzone pizza (folded) that had very little filling, together with a large bowl of mussels that, extremely quickly, became a large bowl of shells due to the lack of meat inside -- this is often the problem with mussels, but don't serve mussels if they are poor quality.
Unfortunately, because the decor is good and wine-by-the- glass is available, 'Italian-owned' means nothing unless there is an Italian chef in the kitchen.
