    • I go here quite a lot. Enjoy the spacious setting, the range of dishes, the "millionaire's cake" and the view of the street. The staff are friendly too. However, they do seem incapable of getting an order right. It's a standing joke amongst my friends and I - what dish will they forget, get wrong or finally deliver once everyone else has finished eating. So, fairly disorganised, but still a favourite haunt.

    • I liked the cakes and the decor. What I did found a bit odd is that you can hear others conversations, and the conversation I overheard was weird.

    • A decent range of veggie options, and the serves of any item i have ordered are reasonable. The only exceptions are the pizzas, of which a 'large' is certainly not large at all, and seems a little deceitful to me. Given that it has such an open-plan setup with a good view, it makes sense to allow people to smoke, at least next to the balcony. But I can't, and that's why I don't come here often. Indeed, as another reviewer mentioned, there is something about this place that does 'creep me out', though i can't quite put my finger on it. There's no vibe. Maybe it's the decor, or the amount of space it has. But that doesn't mean this place isn't worth heading to now and then. The staff are nice, the place is very clean, there is free water, and the food is better than most of the slop served up around wenlin.

    • best place in the wenlin area by far .
      1) in my opinion best cakes all over kunming (millionaires shortbread, white chocolate cheesecake...)
      2) bright and relaxing atmosphere, comfy seats
3)really friendly staff, most of them speak good english
4)ate my way through the vegetarian part of the menu-i havent been disappointed with one dish (well, maybe the hummus, but it came with really delicious bread). french fries, salads, mushroom soup, american pizza-everythings so tasty!
5)prices are really reasonable.15 Kuai for a mug of Yunnan coffee-in other places a cup alone is more.

    • I reckon this is the best place on Wen Hua Xiang.

It has a good selection of Western meals and some delicious cakes and cookies (the millionaire shortbread is the best one I’ve tasted so far). Although it can be a bit tricky to find (the stairs are around the back of the building), its second floor location and open frontage make it a good place to people watch.

    • I agree with WeiXue that Mazagran has a "clean, bright and airy Ikea-like atmosphere", although Ikea conjures up a sterile atmosphere.

      (1) one of the best places to people watch on 文化巷
      (2) the most comfortable, plush seats out of all of the coffee shops in the area (bar none) - perfect when you're sat by the open window looking at the people wandering by
      (3) a no-smoking policy
      (4) lots of plants - big and small - dotted around, including lots of small plants in pots underneath the windows
      (5) free wi-fi
      (6) loyalty scheme (coffee)

I haven't sampled too much of the menu, as for drinks I always stick to iced-Mochas (hence, am not a coffee aficionado), and have only really eaten vegetarian pizza, a humus dish, and a mozzarella / black olive dish on bread (all good).

Unlike the other coffee shops, you don't have to be of dwarf-like proportions to sit down or stand up!

    • The clean, bright and airy Ikea-like atmosphere (no smoking!!!) is what keeps me coming back to Mazagran. As far as the food goes, the pizzas are pretty good (there's one with cranberry that sounds strange, but is surprisingly good), the pumpkin soup is incredible, and there's a cheesy chicken dish (I can't remember the exact name) that is like Chicken Parmesan and a similar one with Eggplant that is delicious. I love that they come as meals with bread and salad. Also, the "Millionaire's Shortbread" is pretty much the best thing ever (a layer of shortbread, caramel, and chocolate).

    • I've only been there once, and while the food was quite good and it's not a bad place to people watch, the decor is absolutely sterile. All they need to do is put something interesting on the walls; maybe a plant or two would help. The 'no alcohol because it's a cafe' doesn't make sense, although if they have other reasons for not having alcohol that's okay with me, I don't have to drink everywhere or always.

    • Actually, it's a great alternative to most places, not just Salvador's. I keep trying different dishes and they're all excellent -- some, would easily win the just-as-mother-made award. The reason, not surprisingly, is that it is family-run with experienced, European-trained cooks. There is no alcohol (because it's a cafe) and no cigarette smoking. The huge open windows enable endless watching of the world going by.

    • Quiet alternative to Salvadors with good food and great cakes. Best place for people watching on Wenhua Xiang!
