Radar detectors

Are radar detectors illegal in China? I am having a helluva time finding one on taobao, and I can only conclude it's because they're prohibited.

I was told it was worth it's cost in traffic tickets to get one. Also since I will be traveling all over China and you have to pay tickets wherever they are issued, it would be terrible if I got speed-camera tickets in other provinces. Imagine getting a ticket in Qinghai and not knowing until you are back in Yunnan! I have to sell the car when I get back, so this will just become a nightmare.

I have looked on Taobao under every conceivable Chinese term I could find. 雷达流动测速 (Mobile Speed Radar) seems to work the best, and produces a page with more filters, which usually means you've found the right term, but none of these are traditional looking radar detectors. They're all multi-function devices with huge screens. I already have a car camera and GPS. I just want a good ol' radar/laser detector.

You can search in English but that produces only a few results for Russian radar detectors.

I also know I can get them on Yuantongbei Lu in the tech shops, but I was hoping to find them on Taobao so I can read reviews and compare brands.

Any comments or experience?

Thanks.

Do many Chinese police use radar or care about speeding if it is not excessive? I have yet to see a radar cop here. I am not saying they do not exist, but I am just wondering.

From what I have been told, the problem is the speed cameras, which are installed on many highways. I have not heard about cops using radar guns themselves.

The fact is, it is all about radar. Any speeding ticket you get is from radar speed cams. You will never have a cop chase you down.

Also if you get a ticket out of town, you will never know about it until you register your car, so you will be back in Kunming anyway.

The cure is to have a radar detector. OR, do what I see must doing, stick a few DVD's over your plate so the cam cannot get your number. As you approach a toll station, stop and remove them, then once past the toll station, stop again and put on the DVD's. That is what most Chinese do.

I drove from Kunming to Fujian, averaging around 180-200 kph. A few cars passed me!

I have a very nice radar detector I bought in the USA. Does everything, all modes, even talks. I don't use it because I have too much other electronics in the car. Anybody want it, I'll sell for 900RMB. PM if you want.

@bucko Now I finally understand why on the new 2013 driver's license test they have all these photos where there is a CD blocking part of the license plate.

@AlPage48 yeah they are really serious about it. Any attempt to mess with the license plate (forged documents, obscured by CD, etc.) is an immediate 12 point offense and results in a revoked license.
