    • After 3 years of snow hiatus I now have the urge to carve a few turns in snow or ice.

      Where are the ski resorts?

How many of you would be interested in a ski club for various levels?

I would like to organize ski trips, I'm planing long term....next year..

    • For lifts, I've heard good things for next year in the Tianshan in the autonomous region that shall not be named. But Kashmir and the Gulmarg Resort is the place to go, and its not so far away now that the Kathmandu flight is open. They get crazy amounts of powder at Gulmarg and cheap lift tickets. But I'm into some Yunnan back country exploration if we ever get snow in this province again.

    • My wife and I went skiing at Yabuli (site of the Asian Winter Games is 1996) in Heilongjian province. while there are some "man made" resorts around Beijing, the only really developed ski area is in Yabuli. It can very cold there, as low as -35 C so make sure you are prepared with goggles, face covering, etc. They do have rental equipment including boots to fit even my US size 13 feet! It's not the latest and greatest and you should check the snow reports (sometimes the conditions are mama huhu) before you go. You can fly in and out of Mudanjiang via Beijing (it's only about an hour car ride to Yabuli. There are several resorts hotels at the ski resort. The village of Yabuli is about 15-20 minutes by car and has a good selection of restaurants and stores.

    • Hi Colin, I was hoping I would get you in this post.

Ok, great info about Kashmir and the Gulmarg Resort being the place to go; this could be a possible future destination for the club. Pow-pow-der sounds great.
Is the terrain challenging? some steep stuff? open terrain?
This could also be a destination for paragliding.

I agree with Colin on Yunnan back country exploration/skiing; it's closer to KM, nature inspired and cheaper than air fare and hotels.
Is the back mountain (north face)of tiger leaping gorge possible to ski?? I read about this slope in the magazine "Yunnan".

I need to go to Canada this summer or fall for a few weeks and I'll bring my skis and gear to KM.... I might as well use it here cuz it's going to rot over there in storage.

      Hey legriffon. JP .

Boards are cheap in Canada spring time, used or new, maybe I can bring one with boots ...
Check the price here in China and we can compare with transport and canadian price to see if it's worth it to bring from Canada..

      Ahmet...
Good info about Yabuli, temperature is like Quebec city where I ski, -1000oC!!
What is the terrain like ? groomed/beginner/intermediate?
      Open terrain with steep sections?

    • Yunnan: Worst drought in 60 years. I wouldn't count on Haba having any snow. Even Baima is gonna be pretty bald. No skiing around here this year.

      Gulmarg: http://ski-gulmarg.co.uk/the-skiing/

And for the summer there are crazy cheap fares for Australia.

    • Yeah, Gulmarg is more than I expected, nice indeed.

Do you have coordinates for google earth?

    • I don`t know if anyone knows more about this one, but two years ago I passed something like a ski-resort on the way from Shangri-La to Deqin. I don`t know if this place is worth of the name ski-resort, and it looked pretty deserted at the time (well, it was october), but there might be a chance of snow in this part of Yunnan.

    • Hi,

I am trying to find some dirt on ski touring in Yunnan. Have you guys seen any evidence of it being possible?

This is the only site I have seen that makes any close reference to actually skiing beyond beginner slopes.

I visit china often but have yet to go to Yunnan... and would love to do some touring/snowboarding there... or anywhere that is not the usual Chinese ski experience.

      thanks for any info.

    • I have been told there is a ski village being built between Zhongdian and Shangri-La. Don't know currently how the construction site is doing.
