    • ^_^,thank you for your replay. i am very glade to know that kcel is still famouse. from your replay, i guess you are not a native english speaker. am i right? Maybe you get some news from our competitor, but that not important. gold is still gold,no metter where they are.let me tell you, what i see in KCEL. the teaching staff join the meeting to improve their teaching every week, and they chat with each other how to teach well. what is the best teaching method.how to use these method, they are all very good teachers.especially, some teachsers who work more than 3 or 5 years for teaching chinese.Likes Zhao Hong,Zhao Yan,Cai Weize,Zhang Guoshan,Jiang Jie,and so on.you say you know KCEL.but definitely you do not know the above. Welcome to our college, you can join our classes for free on a few days. i belive that time, you will change your opinion.
About "many other options ".I must say you are very clever, but these all very new. i think you will know what i means."many" is right, whether it is "available", i am not sure.
if you have any questions, you can ask me. waiting for your replay or sent email to lxyn@elcec.com

    • hahahhahahahahaaa.

so, what's this school called anyway? KCEL, KCELC, ELCEC, Dongfang? if you don't know your own name, how can you be trusted to teach anything to anyone?

(Aside from the universities) Dongfang had a monopoly on student visas for ages, meaning no choice and no competition in the local Mandarin teaching market. Thankfully that's now been fixed, and we'll hopefully see a market-wide rise in quality and decline in prices.

    • ^_^,tank you for your replay.let me answer your questions.

First, tank you for your care about our college,KCEL is the abbreviation for Kunming College of Eastern Language and Culture."Dong Fang" is the translation for kunming college of Eastern language and culture in chinese for short. you know much, but you do not know all.it is not the means we do not know our name.it means you know so less.
second, about "Aside from the universities) Dongfang had a monopoly on student visas for ages",it is not means
meaning no choice and no competition in the local Mandarin teaching market. It means our high quality teaching. it means we pass the test of chinese government. The shcool who do not have means maybe their teaching quality do not pass the level from chinese government.
third,we have competitions.our competitions are univeristies, not the school which the students do not trust and can not help the student get the student visa.
fourth, our small class is better than universities, because our small class only have 5-15 students. The universities are too many students in their classes. It is one of the reason some students who from universities want to join us.
if you have other questions, you can ask me.if you want to ask the advantages of us,it just what i said.^_^

    • thank you for your answer hedgepig.it is not omit Culture, the reason is in our college,we are not only teaching language, language can not far away from culture. so in our chinese teaching,we mix language and culture together. that's why the abbreviation for Kunming College of Eastern Language and Culture is KCEL.I hope you are satisfied with my answer, that's why i say we are high quality institution for teaching mandarin chinese.

    • 1st/ james-ding - continue to make such good advertising for your school by being almost aggressive, impolite and absolutely not clear - WE LOVE IT !

2nd/ let me rectify some points you mention above, because i think you are not honest or just lying :

      - you are talking about how marvelous teachers are in Dongfang, but can you tell us how many from these teachers are REALLY teachers ? (i mean graduation AND certification to be teacher, not with whatever other certification for economy, business etc ...). If you don't dare to tell it here in public, just let me know and it will be my pleasure to give information about that point. (A:less than 50%/B:less than 25%/C:less than 10%)

-OK, i must confess you have some (very few) professionalher like Zhao Hong (good and professional teacher) but concerning Cai Weize or Jiang Jie i have to tell that it is quite unacceptable to have a teacher talking bad standstandardarin Chinese (Kunming-Putonghua).

about Zhao Yan:not good not bad->average

about Zhang Guoshan: not bad but he's not a real teacher, isn't he? moreover his class is a little of mess...

TOTALLY UNCLEAR (can understand nothing, you can try to write again) : "About "many other options ".I must say you are very clever, but these all very new. i think you will know what i means."many" is right, whether it is "available", i am not sure."

hedgepig, i fully agree with your comment :

"(Aside from the universities) Dongfang had a monopoly on student visas for ages, meaning no choice and no competition in the local Mandarin teaching market. Thankfully that's now been fixed, and we'll hopefully see a market-wide rise in quality and decline in prices."

      Thank you for your replay^_^.
First,i guess you are a native chinese and register a new ID to slander our college.gold is forever gold.I am not almost aggressive, impolite and not clear, but i do not want to show too much feeling about your tone. You love aggressive, impolite and absolutely not clear, but we do not like. we like the true, not slander.
second, all the teachers in KCEL are good teachers. the excellent one is more than 70%.expecially what i have been told you. we make the questionnaire, all the students satisfied their teachers' high quality teaching. Especially, what i have been told you. if you do not believe, you can come to KCEL to see these questionnaires
welcome to KCEL join these teachers clasees, and then tell us the true. we want to know our shortcoming,it is good for us improve our teaching, but we do not like slander.welcomes you sinceresly whatever you hold what kind of psychology. ^_^

    • james-ding, you say gold is forever gold but do you know that shit stay forever shit !!? (just an information, i said nothing, everybody can judge by itself)
what d you mean about 70% ? you do not answer the question. why are you're affraid to answer the question ? BECAUSE it is a shame to be a schooll with LESS THAN 10% of their teachers being certified real teacher. Yes you read correctly less than 10% !!!!

rainer, i believe you, you can have a good teacher. the teachers themselves they try their best to do good job (even they are not teachers for MOOOST of them)

but rainer, i do not know where you come from but i am sure that if you knew how they treat teachers in this school, you would look for another place immediately (no contract for teachers, no insurance for teachers etc ...) james-ding can you confirm ?

last bu not least, i do not need to come t your school because i already know how you deal with students and i think that the way you do show very few respect (like for the teachers).

just stay away from dongfang and you'll be more happy.

Let us give this questions to kcel's students. rainer, thank you so much for you to tell the true.

    • james-ding you are so funny with all your insinuation. i like your imagination ....
of course everyone is free to choose what he likes, i'm just giving some clues about the subject. and i dont think this school is a good choice (my opinion). you have to try your luck for a good teacher (not even 10% are qualified) not mention the teachers conditions there.

afterall if one likes to spend their money there and support this kind of behaviour towards students and teachers, again everyone is free.
i think it is no good to encourage something that creates social insecurity and will not contribute to improve the local situation. not mention the image it gives to the rest of the world.

    • Im a student at KCEL and up until now have been quite happy with the quality of teaching there.

However...............As of this week our teacher has transferred to one of the other campuses and my first impression of this teacher isn't good. I'd heard before I enrolled there that the quality of teaching is hit and miss but when I tried it out I was immediately impressed by my (now former) teacher. Had I tried my new teachers class out I wouldn't have enrolled.

Two other issues I have are 1) The school advertises that it is the only one in Kunming that can sort your visa out for you. This is not true. A friend of mine recently enrolled at one of the universities and they sorted his visa out for him. And 2) They charge a rate based on two hour classes, but my classes are from 10:20 - 12:00 with a 10 min break. In total 1 1/2 hours per day. Which cuts my 10 hour a week course down to 7 1/2 hours.

I don't want to sound bitchy as my Chinese is improving. It just seems to me that the key is finding one of the good teachers. And, as with many things in China, not taking what you're told as gospel.

I will be giving my new teacher the benefit of the doubt for now and will post my conclusion when iv come to it.

    • Well, I give the management of the west campus a big thumbs down. I arrived in Kunming in July, and the director(Loris) promised I could take the classes I wanted even if no other students signed up for them. My gut feeling wasn't so great to begin with, at the time because he smoked in the school, and let other people smoke in the school.

I guess next time I'll follow my gut feeling because come August and I went to pick up my schedule, and he wouldn't let me take the classes I wanted. Said that I had to pay for the classes they arranged for me. The same teacher the whole week, and a terrible textbook unless you enjoy learning about "beijing" culture.

I asked for a few weeks to find a different school, but he repeatedly emphasized that the police would take away my student visa. I just recently switched schools and surprise surprise they didn't refund any of my tuition.

Live and learn I guess. On the bright side I quite like the school I switched to, KUST Northern Language Institute

    • I was planning to go to the west campus too. Two days before term started, I was assured by the central campus staff that it would be open. Accordingly slapped down a big bundle of cash for an apartment close by to it, only to find on the first day of term it was not open (I guess the chain-smoking heavily beijing accented guy I found prowling about on that morning was the aforementioned teacher - he offhandishly told me the campus would not open for another month or two). Went back to the central campus, slightly irate, and took a while to drag the reason out of them (something to do with the west capus management dropping out at the last minute - seems to be run on a franchise system).

Despite this, I am now at the central campus - very happy, but that's mainly down to the teacher I have now settled with (the first teacher I tried out was of the unengaging, parrot-repetition school of thought). The school are very flexible about changing classes - if anyone is thinking of signing up, I'd recommend you don't pay in advance - the school are okay with people trying out the classes for free for the first couple of weeks.

    • Re: the KCEL western campus, I can vouch for the new management (after it re-opened in October). My wife has had Julie Zhao, the new manager, as a teacher for four years, and she's doing a good job at setting up the re-opened western campus to suit students. And she doesn't smoke...

Right now there are only a handful of students, as they reopened in the middle of the semester, but we and our friends like it there. Nifty facility (ping pong table on the fourth floor!), good location (near ChunYuan XiaoQu).

Ouyang, as to your refund, I suggest you drop in and talk to Julie about it, I can guarantee she'll look into it (if she hasn't already from reading your post), and at least give you a straight answer, no double-talk.

    • They also promised me the same thing in July. But come August they wouldn't let me attend the classes I wanted. They forced me to pay tuition saying the police would send me home otherwise. Never arranged classes. Refused to refund my tuition when I changed schools after not having a single class. Only stating that the director responsible has been fired for it.
