Feng Xiaogang on the set of The Banquet
Feng Xiaogang on the set of The Banquet

Beijing-born director and writer Feng Xiaogang (冯小刚) will be joining the faculty of Dali University as a guest professor, according to a Dushi Shibao report.

During a three-day stay in Dali's old town last week, Feng was approached by Dali University regarding a guest professorship at the school. Apparently enamored with Dali – he reportedly said he hoped to shoot a film there someday – Feng met with officials at the university and accepted the invitation. No details have been made available regarding the schedule or content of his classes at Dali University.

Feng is director of several major mainland films since 2000, including The Banquet (夜宴) and Cell Phone (手机). He has also written and directed the films A World Without Thieves (天下无贼) and Big Shot's Funeral (大腕) and has acted in several major productions, most notably in a cameo role as the Crocodile Gang Boss in Stephen Chow's action comedy Kung Fu Hustle.

Feng has directed some of China's biggest screen names including Zhang Ziyi, Zhou Xun, Andy Lau, Li Bingbing, Fan Bingbing and Ge You. He has also directed foreign actors including Donald Sutherland, who starred in Big Shot's Funeral.

Already a popular getaway destination for Chinese directors, actors and writers, Dali is expected to become increasingly competitive in terms of attracting new film and television projects in the next few years as Chinese studios seek alternatives to Beijing and Shanghai.

From November 27 to December 1 of this year Kunming will host its first international film festival - BigScreen Festival 2007 - further cementing its reputation as one of China's most cultured and interesting cities.

After last year's successful BigScreen Italia festival - which highlighted Chinese and Italian cinema for three days in Kunming during the year of Italy in China - BigScreen is back this year as a full-on international film festival celebrating films and short videos from China and around the world.

Last year's incarnation of BigScreen featured acclaimed directors Wang Xiaoshuai and Jia Zhangke (who shortly afterward won the Golden Lion for best film at the Venice Film Festival) and garnered a significant amount of media attention in China and Italy.

This year BigScreen will feature five days of film and photography competitions and exhibitions, Chinese and international musical performers, special guests and some surprises. Organized by CinaOggi and GoKunming and hosted by the Yunnan Art Institute, BigScreen Festival 2007 is now accepting film and photo submissions.

Directors, photographers and all other interested parties can learn more about BigScreen Festival 2007 at the official festival website. Watch this space for BigScreen Festival news and updates and don't hesitate to contact us to find out how your company or organization can sponsor this major cultural event.

Kunming's movie aficionados usually reach a point where watching DVDs of the newest releases at home doesn't sound as good as seeing a movie in a real cinema with a bucket of popcorn and a date or a bunch of friends.

Kunming Movie Business, which owns three of Kunming's most popular cinemas - Xinjianshe Cinema, Renmin Cinema and Dianchi Vision Plaza - is offering online ticket booking, movie schedules and upcoming movie title listings via its websites. The sites, currently only in Chinese, are useful resources for anyone wondering what's showing, whether a film has English subtititles, or if there are any tickets left.

Attention budding documentarians: Yunfest, a biennial documentary festival and forum held right here in Kunming, is accepting entries for Yunfest 2007. Next year's Yunfest is scheduled for April 6-12, documentaries from Chinese and non-Chinese are equally welcome.

GoKunming attended Yunfest in 2005 and was pleasantly surprised by the organization and dedication behind the event. Of the 100 or so documentaries shown, many were from around Yunnan plus a good number were made by filmmakers from around the country. International documentarians Tsuchimoto Noriaki and Carma Hinton showed their films and hosted question-and-answer sessions with audiences.

We can hardly wait to take a few days off work and theater-hop for four days. To find out more about what Yunfest was like last time around, read this article we wrote for a US newspaper in 2005.

In a rather ironic development, director Chen Kaige, whose movie "The Promise" destroyed vegetation at Bigu Lake in northwest Yunnan, has been nominated for a 'Green Chinese' award. The award is given to Chinese who raise their countrymates' environmental awareness.

Makers of "The Promise" were reportedly fined US$11,250 for the environmental damage caused at Bigu Lake during the filming of the US$35 million film. Evidently, the logic is that the incident set off intense environmental discussions among Chinese. Hmm... in that case, we'd like to nominate the crew behind the recent oil spill on Dianchi Lake. Good luck gentlemen!
