This weekend there will plenty to do in Kunming to stave off the cold weather - a Thai masquerade party, Latin carnival night, Scandinavian jazz and the coronation of England or South Africa as Rugby World Cup champion are a few of the events going on around town in the next 48 hours:
Masquerade party and Thai buffet at Moonlight Corner
Several new restaurants featuring authentic cuisines from beyond the Middle Kingdom have opened in the last year, a trend that has made dining options in Kunming much more diverse than before. One of the more notable but-lesser known newcomers to the Kunming dining scene is Moonlight Corner, a Thai restaurant featuring Thai management, Thai chefs and fresh imported Thai ingredients. Its location on a hill in the Expo Gardens boasts one of the best views of the Kunming skyline to be found anywhere in the city.
Tonight Moonlight Corner will celebrate its first birthday with a masquerade party (they'll provide the masks) and Thai buffet plus games, music and a costume contest. The buffet begins at six and costs 168 yuan, rsvp at 5013125.
Latin Carnival Night at The Hump Bar
The Hump Bar at Jinma Biji Fang will host a Latin Carnival party Saturday night featuring live Brazilian music and plenty of dancing - one of the better ways to fend off the cold this weekend. Free salsa, meringue and samba lessons will be offered beginning at 9 pm and caipirinha and piña colada drink specials will be on offer all night. Admission to the party in the Hump Bar - located on the first floor beneath the Hump Guesthouse - is free.
Live Jazz with GENE at TCG Nordica
An alternative to Kunming's steady diet of punk, metal and post rock, Scandinavian gallery TCG Nordica will host the jazz group GENE on Saturday night for an 8 pm concert for 30 yuan.
Rugby World Cup championship match at Chapter One
This weekend the Rugby World Cup wraps up, with the France-Argentina consolation match to be shown live at Chapter One Saturday at 3 am (note to the temporally challenged: that's late-night tonight). The championship match between England and South Africa will be shown Sunday at 3 am. As with the last two weekends, BeerLao will be on special for 10 yuan/bottle from the start of each match until the first points scored.

Despite the last gasps of the rainy season putting a damper on the weather, there are still plenty of reasons to get out of the house this weekend. A blind rock musician on tour, Thai and Scandanavian barbecue, an exhibition opening and televised Rugby World Cup semifinals are just some of what will be going on this around Kunming. Here's a rundown:
Zhou Yunpeng at Halfway House
Folk rock guitarist Zhou Yunpeng (周云蓬) plays the Halfway House tonight in support of "Chinese Kids" (中国孩子), his new album on Beijing-based indie label Modern Sky. Zhou is one of the more interesting stories in Chinese rock at the moment. By the age of nine he was fully blind, at the age of 15 he began playing guitar, later he began writing poetry and songs and is now on one of China's top homegrown labels. Zhou Yunpeng plays the Halfway House at 9pm tonight, admission is 20 yuan.
Weekend barbecues at Moonlight Corner and TCG Nordica
Thai restaurant Moonlight Corner is launching its weekend Thai barbecue menu tonight. The restaurant - located in the World Horticultural Expo Gardens in northeast Kunming - will be offering Thai barbecue specialties including herbal grilled fish and grilled squid every Friday through Sunday night from 5 to 9 pm.
Scandinavian gallery TCG Nordica will also be holding regular weekend barbecues at its location in The Loft (aka Chuangku - 创库). The barbecues will feature several kinds of meats and vegetables and begin at 6 pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
"Seeds of Hope" exhibition opening
This Saturday, TCG Nordica will host the opening of "Seeds of Hope", its exhibition of works by artists Eta Hedman and AnnaKarin Svensson. The opening begins at 8pm Saturday night, refreshments and snacks will be provided.
World Cup Rugby Semifinals at Chapter One
Chapter One continues to provide late-night showings of the Rugby World Cup, this weekend showing semifinal matches with England playing France on Sunday morning (Saturday night if you're staying up late) at 3 am and South Africa versus Argentina at 3am Monday morning. Saturday night at 9:30 pm it will show the England-Estonia football (soccer) match. During the matches Beerlao will be on special for 10 yuan until the first points scored.

Kunming's recent run of warm sunny days has awoken the city from several weeks of staying inside. Gone are the puffy and drab accoutrements of winter, which have been shed in favor of more form-fitting and revealing attire. Strangers are smiling at one another in passing and everyone seems to be looking better than they were a couple of weeks ago.
This year Valentine's Day comes but a few days before the weeklong Chinese New Year holiday, Whether you have a date and haven't figured out what to do for Valentine's Day, you're still weighing your options or you're planning on going out solo, there are plenty of off-the-beaten-path options for a romantic Valentine's Day in the Spring City. Here are just a few recommendations.
Rooftop tea: If the skies are clear, Yi Hu Chun's rooftop tea garden is one of the better places in Kunming to soak in some sun. Located on the southeastern corner of Cuihu Park, Yi Hu Chun has a wide selection of reasonably priced Chinese teas that complement the super-chill rooftop. A good place to while away an afternoon together.
Fine dining in the Expo Gardens: Moonlight Corner is currently one of Kunming's better-kept secrets. Tucked away in the Expo Gardens in northeast Kunming, this is as authentic as Thai dining gets in China. Ingredients are flown in from Thailand every week for preparation by the restaurant's four Thai chefs. Moonlight Corner's elegant seating, attentive staff and one of the best views of the city make the dining experience complete.
A stroll in the park: An afterdinner walk through Cuihu Park is always a good way to walk off a meal and find a hidden spot for some quiet time, or to take in some traditional music and dancing. Cuihu closes relatively early, guards will ask you to leave at 11:00.
Hot springs!: Kunming has several good options for hot springs, all of which offer a healthful and sensual experience perfectly suited to Lovers' Day.
Located near the western end of Dianchi Lu, Dianchi Spring Spa is an increasingly popular hot springs destination, with hot springs and a small meal running a reasonable 86 yuan.
Jinfang Forest Hot Springs, another popular hot springs venue is located about 90 minutes outside of Kunming in the city of Anning.
Perhaps the most decadent hot springs destination around Kunming is Yangzonghai Brilliant Spa (see image above), nestled on Yangzonghai Lake about one hour south of Kunming. Even with a discount, soaking in hot springs is 280 yuan. The lakeside hot springs area is decorated with volcanic rock and a fusion of Yunnan, Southeast Asian and Japanese elements. For those with cash to spend, there are VIP rooms -featuring in-room hot springs - available for as much as 2,500 per night.
Shake that thing: Shelter Bar should be one of the better destinations for singles tomorrow night, the underground bar on Yuantong Dong Lu will be hosting a Latin dance party featuring Chengdu-based DJ Joe. Music starts at 10 and there is no cover charge.
Get help from a Buddha: Unable to find a date? Feeling unwanted? The Yuantong apparition of Guanyin, the Buddha of compassion, accepts you just the way you are. Guanyin can be found at Yuantong Temple on 30 Yuantong Lu, a short walk east of Cuihu Park.
Regardless of where you go and what you do, GoKunming wishes you a happy Valentine's Day.
