Friday: Student documentaries at Yuansheng Studio Two documentaries by Yunnan University students will be screened for free tonight at 7:30 at Yuansheng Studio in The Loft/Chuangku art compound on Xiba Lu. Total running time for the documentaries is around three hours. Friday: Drinking game night at Speakeasy Bar Beginning at midnight tonight, Speakeasy Bar will hold drinking games with free bottles of Jim Beam for winners. Vodka depth charges will be on special for 10 yuan and music will be supplied by DJs Latino and Yan. Saturday: Demerit and Noise Addiction at Speakeasy Bar Beijing punk band Demerit will play Speakeasy on Saturday as the Kunming stop on their current national tour. Local boys Noise Addiction will provide the opening set for the 10 o'clock show. Admission is 30 yuan. DJs Hei and Ping will take over the DJ booth at midnight, when admission will be free again. Monday: All-white costume party Dali The Bird Bar in Dali will be holding an all-white costume party on Monday beginning at 9 pm and lasting until early Tuesday. Party organizers emphasize that partygoers should wear as much white as possible. Entertainment will be provided by Kunming's own DJ Kris, plus Dali-based DJ Xiao Lin and VJ Kil Lee. The old town of Dali has changed a lot over the last ten years, with one of the biggest changes being the emergence of Renmin Lu as a rival to the once-cool "Foreigner Street" (洋人街). A mere eight years ago, Renmin Lu was a quiet cobblestone road with barbershops, snack stalls, local restaurants and a host of other small businesses more geared toward the local market than the Chinese bohemians or foreign backpackers that now flock to the street's countless restaurants, bars, cafés, guesthouses and shops. Back then there was only one bar on Renmin Lu - The Bird Bar - comfortably perched at the top of the street. Owned by artists/entrepreneurs and Shandong natives Zhao Rongjie and Liu Xinmin, the Bird Bar is now the oldest fixture on the Renmin Lu scene. Since the early days, the Bird Bar has expanded, adding a guesthouse and even a villa across the street. On Thursday the Bird will celebrate its eighth birthday with a buffet dinner provided by Mo (another Dali institution), foosball competition and DJ Xiao Lin, plus DJs DSK and Shonny of Uprock and VJ K-108 playing late into the night. The buffet dinner is 35 yuan and will run from 6:30 pm until 8:30 pm. The foosball competition – winner gets an unspecified prize – runs from 8 until 10. Music and dancing commence at 10. Aside from the buffet, admission to the party is free. Since opening in April 2000, the Bird Bar has grown to include a guesthouse and one of the nicer courtyards in old Dali. In those years, the Bird has become a popular stop for travelers and locals, Chinese and foreigners, attracting a varied clientele and hosting its share of parties and pool tournaments. Tuesday night's party will feature music by Kunming's DJ Kris and drunken firedancing by Grandma Dali. There is no cover charge for the event, which starts at sundown. Tomorrow is the Mid-Autumn Festival, a time to spend with family and friends admiring the full moon while eating, drinking and maybe forcing down a mooncake or two. Dali is always a good place for Mid-Autumn moongazing and this year is no exception. Friday night there will be a couple of parties to celebrate the year's harvest. The Bird Bar will be featuring the highly danceable musical stylings of DJ Kris1 inside the bar, with plenty of room in the courtyard out back for a lunar fa dai session. Festivities should kick off around 10 or 11ish. Down on Erhai Lake, new arrival Dragonfly Garden is throwing their second big party since opening several weeks back. The Dragonfly party will feature 12 hours of live music and DJs from 8pm to 8am, fire shows, juggling, all-night barbecue and unlimited punch, all for the low entry fee of 15 yuan.
